favorite tumblr artist holy friggin shit
Yeah, I’m in art school now, but I am self taught up to this point.
Don’t be so quick to dismiss your drawing class! I know it’s tedious and you might feel like you’re not getting any better with “proper” method, but let me tell you that it’ll all click soon. Teaching yourself to draw can be very possible if you have the motivation and you stick with it. Now I’m in no place to give real art advice, but a few tips I can give are:
1) Draw every single day. All the time. Whenever you have free time
and especially when you don’t .I’m not saying you gotta bust out an illustration every day, but doodling can actually take you a long way, whether it’s in a sketchbook (which helps if you have one on you everyday) or just in the margin of your notes. That’s literally how I started: I got bored in Algebra 2 class and started pissing my teacher off by drawing on every friggin handout/page of notes/ homework.
2) You see good art work? Draw it. Let me be very clear that you should never, ever trace. However, fanart can be such a great motivator to draw, and when you have favourite artists, try to pin down why you like their work so much. Is it their coloring style? Their sense of anatomy? Composition? Take what you like and make it your own. Don’t ever copy line for line or you won’t learn, but instead find out how they do it.
3) Use references, draw from what’s around you. If you don’t know this already, learn it quick. Stop drawing what you expect or think something looks like, and draw what’s actually in front of you. Draw from life as you’ve probably already heard in your class. The better you get at this the better you’ll be at pulling ideas and sketches outta your ass.
4) Art is fuckin hard. If your work isn’t seeming up to the standard you would like it to be, push yourself until you figure it out. This goes back to what I was saying about drawing all the time. If you’re stuck on something (like you can’t figure out how shoes work for example), draw that shit all the time. Don’t avoid it. Keep drawing it until you’re sitting there in the middle of your english lecture and you accidentally say out loud “Holy fuck balls I get it now”. Try not to slip into the bad habit of drawing the same exact thing all over your sketch book because it’s “all your’re good at”. I once opened a girl’s sketchbook and all she had was drawings of front-facing anime maid girls in slightly different dresses. For 60 pages straight. Don’t do that.
Meanwhile, in prehistoric Canada…..
No no, you don’t understand, moose really do get that big. Take it from a Canadian. I’ve seen that bullshit in person. Scary as all heck.
